It is once again that time to vote for our PASS Board of Directors(official election page). Having been a volunteer in this organization now for almost 10 years this is a process I am very interested in. I have served 2 years on the board and spent some time in most of the various volunteer committees you will find in the PASS organization.
The most important thing for the election is that you get out and vote! You need to exercise your right to a voice and vote for who you feel is the best candidate. I’ve listed my endorsement for candidates below this is my opinion on these candidates but comes from years of experience working with them in a volunteer role. I’ve worked with both of them closely on many different aspects of the PASS organization.
Allen Kinsel (Blog|Twitter|Candidate Page)
I have known Allen since 2004 and we both have been volunteering about the same amount of time with PASS. He has a proven track record of getting things done in the PASS Organization. He helped deliver the tools the Program committee now uses to pick sessions and allow for great PASS Summit sessions. He helped with the Chapter tools we have now as well and forwarded the movement for the chapters as a board member. He has consistently showed PASSion in the volunteer efforts he has been involved in. I think his previous time on the Board and previous volunteering gives him excellent depth and experience in this arena. For me he’s the best overall candidate that knows the organization well and is willing to go the extra mile for the PASS organization and SQL community.
Tim Ford (Blog|Twitter|Candidate Page)
Tim is truly awesome to me. He has organization skills, business sense, funny, great photographer and an exceptional volunteer. He has always helped out the PASS organization in many different roles. He knows event planning and managing events from the SQL Saturday events he has put on and from founding and running SQL Cruise. He is passionate about change and about making things better. Tim is the best newcomer candidate I think. He not only knows the PASS organization well but knows the things that need to get done to keep it going on a path to greatness.
My third candidate/vote is yet to be decided for me. I will be doing research over the next few days to try and determine my last vote. I strongly suggest you do the same. Don’t just take my word for it research the candidates and talk to them and ask them questions find out which ones you feel are the right fit.
The one thing I believe all candidates need when on the Board is a PASSion for helping others. Volunteering at the level of the board is hard work and takes a lot of time and effort and that PASSion is what keeps you going.
So I had planned a post to talk about who I was going to vote for and outlining some of the reasons. Unfortunately a failure to plan is a plan for failure! A customer who shall remain nameless decided to lose a LUN on their SAN on Monday. No I don’t know exactly how you accomplish this but I most likely will have a blog post about what you should do if it does happen in the future(Long nights are in your future if this happens) . So this took away time from me getting a blog post up. Instead I give you this advice if you have not voted already (I’m sure many have)
1. Research! The forums located here (Login Required). Have been great to talk to the candidates and get lots of various questions answered.
2. Talk to the candidates. If you have a specific question you want to ask them get a hold of them. They all are reachable by email.
3. Read through the #passvotes hashtag. While much of this has been discussions on the process it’s also the candidates talking in there as well.
The point here is to make an informed decision when casting your vote. Personally I have yet to vote and honestly I have not decided the three I will vote for as I have not had the time to read through all the forum posts and questions. Although I know many of the candidates well I know they put a lot of time and effort into answering questions and I want to respect them by giving them the time and effort they gave me. I have a feeling it will take me the weekend to get through all the candidates.
The other point I want to make about the elections is once again about process. Tons of discussion has taken place on the process. Whether good bad or indifferent if you have written a blog post, added a comment on a blog, or discussed in the forums please make sure to let PASS HQ know. Just because it’s out on your blog or in some comment does not guarantee that they will see it. If you really want to make the process better for next year then you need to send in your comments/suggestions to PASS HQ directly so Johannes can get the information he needs to make the process better. If you need to know where to send that information Johannes outlines it very well in this post (Login Required).
Finally a HUGE thank you to all of the community that has spoken up about the election/process/candidates, you are what make the SQL community great.
UPDATE: I have moved these questions to the http://Elections.sqlpass.org Discussion forum. So that they can be discussed by all there on the forums. I will not be putting up the candidate responses instead I would like them to answer on that site.
Tomorrow will be a big day for the group of candidates that are looking to become a member of the PASS Board of Directors. Candidates that have made the slate will get announced on the 18th of Aug. All election details and candidates can be found on the PASS election site located here.
If you are a PASS member or even a just a member of the SQL Community you need to start talking to these candidates asking questions and gathering information about them. The PASS Board has a large effect on the SQL community so you should put some serious thought into these candidates.
Andy Leonard (Blog |Twitter) has done an excellent series of interview questions for the PASS Board Candidates on his blog series listed here. I came up with a few more questions that were important to me after discussing with Andy I decided to take the same format for my blog posts as he did for his. I decided to wait until the final candidate list was chosen. Below is the list of questions I will be emailing to each candidate and I will post the responses as I receive them here on my blog.
1. PASS has been making strides to improve transparency over the last few years. Do you intend to further the transparency of PASS and if so how? If not why?
2. PASS is a volunteer run organization. If you are elected to the board what will you do to help the volunteers make PASS a better organization?
3. Let’s assume hypothetically that PASS has decided to create a PASS Certification program. You have been tasked with creating a proposal for how you would do this. Please tell me how you would create the proposal and your feelings on whether you think this is a good idea or not.
These are the questions that are important to me. I would suggest that you find questions that are important to you and email them to the candidates and get your questions answered before you vote.
I want to say thank you to the Board candidates that have applied and given their time. Whether you make it on the Board or not you have been willing to volunteer your time and that’s always a good thing in my book.
